Overview
This project focused on the design and delivery of a greenfield SIM management platform for connected devices.
The goal was to create a self-service system that would allow customers to manage large volumes of M2M/IoT SIM cards independently—without relying on account managers or manual support processes.
Woods & Walker worked as a technology partner across multiple stakeholders, contributing to product definition, platform architecture, and end-to-end delivery of an MVP designed to support rapid growth and future commercial scale.
The Challenge
Managing M2M SIM cards at scale is operationally complex.
End users often depend on account managers or sales teams to perform basic tasks such as provisioning SIMs, checking usage, or applying data limits. This creates friction for customers and introduces unnecessary operational cost for providers.
The challenge was to design a platform that could:
- Expose complex network and SIM data in a clear, usable way
- Allow customers to provision, manage, and control SIMs themselves
- Support multi-network connectivity and device-level visibility
- Scale from early-stage MVP to a commercial product
At the same time, the platform needed to be flexible enough to support different commercial models and usage patterns across customers.
The Solution
Greenfield, API-First Platform
We designed the platform from the ground up using an API-first approach. This ensured a clear separation between core business logic and user experience, while enabling future integrations, automation, and partner access.
A modern single-page application sits on top of the API, giving end users real-time visibility and control over their SIM estate.
End-User Self-Service by Design
A core objective of the platform was to shift control directly to the customer.
The system enables users to:
- Activate and provision new SIM cards
- View live network status and connectivity information
- Track data usage at SIM and account level
- Inspect identifiers such as ICCID and device IMEI
- See which network a SIM is currently connected to, including multi-carrier support
By exposing this information clearly, the platform removes the need for routine support interactions.
Flexible Usage & Data Controls
Different customers require different commercial models.
The platform supports:
- Per-SIM data allowances over defined time periods
- Central data pools shared across multiple SIMs
- Configurable limits to prevent over-usage
These controls give customers confidence and predictability, while reducing billing disputes and manual intervention.
Remote Device Commands
In addition to monitoring, the platform allows users to send commands directly to connected devices.
This includes actions such as remotely rebooting devices, enabling faster issue resolution without physical access.
The Outcome
The finished MVP delivered a strong foundation for a commercial SIM management product:
- Significant reduction in manual support through customer self-service
- Improved customer experience with real-time visibility and control
- Faster provisioning and onboarding for new SIMs and devices
- A scalable platform capable of supporting growth across customers and use cases
By placing data and control directly in the hands of end users, the platform shifts the operating model from account-led to product-led.
Partnership
This project reflects Woods & Walker’s strength in greenfield product development and early-stage platforms.
We work closely with founders, product owners, and technical stakeholders to turn complex infrastructure capabilities into usable, commercial software. By focusing on clear APIs, scalable architecture, and real customer needs, we help startups and innovation teams move from concept to viable product with confidence.
We operate best as a long-term technology partner—supporting experimentation early on and evolution as products mature.
